Transforming Systems From the Outside

Susanne Duijvestein

EPISODE 4

Susanne Duijvestein, Funeral Director

“I woke up one day realising that I didn’t want to serve the system anymore, so I just quit my job.”

Tessa takes the first morning of Corona lockdown in the Netherlands to speak with Funeral Director Susanne Duijvestein. They talk about the place death has in our society; how it influences the way we deal with nature; about the unethical and unsustainable nature of the ‘industry’; and our last-act impact on the planet.

Susanne realized she harbored a dissatisfaction with the prevailing systems she found herself supporting, and decided that she needed to leave her job - to take on a role serving a bigger system, our planet. She started her business Susanne Bij Afscheid, embracing death as a part of life; looking at the healing beauty of reclaiming our own rites of passage and offering a different perspective and alternative to the conservative and money-making funeral industry.
