Taking Action from the Inside
What I've been trying to do in at my company is try to highlight the fact that we are not doing enough for the environment. And internally, first of all. So it needs to be a change of mind or elevation of our consciousness about how important the environment is. And from there, to start talking to our clients who are polluters or offenders, that they have to do more about it.

Insisting We Have to Talk
So there are different stages in change. Agitating is only one, but an important step to really insist that we have to talk about something. As an employee in a company, you could simply start a group and invite people to it. And that may be sufficient and maybe a lot of interest. Or you could do something more disruptive and I mean disruptive in the widest sense of that word, because sometimes speaking truthfully and passionately tearfully is disruptive. You know, sometimes sticking up posters in the toilets anonymously is disruptive. You know, that’s what a person needs to work that out within their own organization.

The frontline of the climate fight
After building Makes Sense for 12 years it’s clear that we can build new startups so people take bikes instead of cars in the cities. We can make people volunteer for a nonprofit to decrease carbon emission. But when you look at the urgency on the climate front, solutions need to grow faster. And the reason they don't grow faster is not because it's not the right time. It's not because the scale, it’s because the regulations are not giving them an advantage. A lot of regulations are giving an advantage to the people who continue to pollute. And so maybe the best way to change regulations is through activism.

What ‘good business’ means
There is a kind of collective confusion, we have no idea and no agreement on what it means to be a good business anymore. We don’t even have very good words to talk about these subjects. you’ve got to wade through a thicket of jargon before you can even get to the point. One of the most interesting trends of the last decade, but particularly the last five years, is the organizational speaking up has completely transformed. The big question is how organisations should respond.

Make space to reflect, learn & talk.
One thing that persists in that sort of situation is the requirement for all of those involved activists and leaders and activist leaders to create the spaces where they can reflect and learn and make choices. When you're in uncharted territory and it's changing all the time and there isn't a clear how to guide or similar opinions on it, one thing you've got to do is make space to to reflect and learn and talk.
